Yes, You CAN Change Your Life After 50 - Gently and Peacefully and With Purpose

A New Chapter of Life-But What?

You've spent decades caring for others. Children, spouses, aging parents. You've had other demands from work, society, family and other responsibilities. As you now are approaching this new phase, where the responsibilities are quieting down and you aren't needed as much, a quiet question may be arising: "What about me? What now?"

If you are a woman over 50 and feeling uncertain about this next chapter of your life, know that you are NOT alone...and even more importantly, know that you CAN begin to make changes and flow into this new phase in a gentle, comforting way.

I know because I've been where you are, a few different times. I've chosen to make changes, sometimes drastic ones, and in every circumstance, my life only improved and I found more joy and contentment.

Why We Might Struggle with Change after 50.

A simple truth in any stage of life is that change can feel intimidating and sometimes terrifying. As a woman who has lived a number of decades, you've been through a lot of changes, but many of them might not have been by choice.

You were most likely just "winging it" sometimes, doing what was necessary to get through whatever situation you were in to protect those you loved and give them the best possible life.

During these times, you were not necessarily doing what was best for YOU, but for them.

Now that your life is less about caring for others, you might be feeling lost or purposeless. You might have dreams or desires, but at this later stage, it might seem wrong to want to do something just for your own happiness.

I hope you hear me when I say this...

It is NOT wrong to be finally, for once, thinking of yourself.

  • You deserve to explore your passions.

  • You deserve to feel free and fulfilled.

  • You deserve to find what brings you joy and pursue a life you love living.

You are capable of changing the trajectory of your life from confusion to contentment, from feeling alone to feeling alive, and from empty to empowered.

Awareness: The First Step Towards Change.

The path to transformation begins with an awareness of your longing or discontent. You may have felt a longing for something you don't yet have, or discontent about something you do have that you would like to change.

This may have been going on for years, but you didn't have time to address it, or chose to ignore it. But how is a great time to start evaluating things! Ask yourself questions like:

  • Am I truly happy in my day-to-day life?

  • Is there something I've always wanted to do that I now have the time for?

  • Is there something I would like to change?

If any of these questions, or other ones you might have come up with yourself, resonate with you or stir something within you, you're already on your way to accepting and creating a change that will uplevel your life.

Gentle Ways to Begin Exploring What You Might Desire

You don't have to figure EVERYTHING out at once. Small, consistent practices can help you reconnect with your inner wisdom so you can recognize what lights you up, brings joy and just feels right as you continue your life's journey.

1. Create a Daily Quiet-Time Practice and daydream.

Use a journal or sketch pad to doodle or free-write whatever comes into your mind. This is about simply listening and being curious about your true inner thoughts. There doesn't have to be structure here, this can be messy, raw or beautiful. It is your sacred space to spend time with the most important person in your life...YOU.

2. Revisit Your Childhood Interests and Passions.

Think back to what you loved doing as a girl. Did you love painting, singing or dancing? Were you always outdoors enjoying the natural world wonders? Reconnect with those memories and see if you feel a calling to pursue any of those things again.

3. Take a quiet walk in nature every day.

Nature has a way of dissolving stress and chaos from the otherwise loud world and awakening insight. A daily walk, going to a park to read or journal, or even starting a garden in your own yard can reconnect you with a deeper part of yourself.

4. Practice Saying "Yes" to Yourself.

This may be the hardest part. Say YES to your desires and needs. Say YES to resting if you feel tired. Say YES to declining an invitation you don't feel like accepting. Say YES to trying something new, even if you aren't good at it yet.

This is a wonderful opportunity to start an amazing new adventure with you as the lead character. You can still be there for those who love you and have depended on you all these years, but now it is time for you to care for YOU too.
